Some places we recommend that are just outside of NYC. The area is just ok, but the rates are going to be 20-40% cheaper than in the city, which is about 1-3 stops away on the train(subway). Prepare yourself, the rooms are small for what you pay. This is NYC.

Here is a list of cheap hotels in the city. It would be great if you can stay in the city to get a great feel for it, but you get what you pay for, so beware and ask lots of questions. Most of these are fine, if you don't plan on staying in your room very much. They are not new, but for the price and location it may be worth it.

Friends have stayed at the Hotel Carter (700 rooms) in Times Square for under $150 a night depending on the season, but just remember the rooms are on the old side, but again, sometimes you just want to be in the action and be able to quickly jump on any train to get anywhere in Manhattan in less than 30 mins. This place reminds me an older hotel in Las Vegas, in case that helps.

Obviously all the big hotel chains have nice hotels here, so check out your favorites.
The Hilton Times Square is cool, just know that you will be in the middle of times square with a lot of other people.
